There's nothing more confusing in life than someone who refuses to accept that withholding a part of their order actually makes it a different order. It's like when someone orders a cheeseburger without cheese but refuses to accept that all that does is make it a hamburger. Similarly, if you're ordering eggs Benedict without Hollandaise sauce, you might as well just be ordering a poached egg on a bun. Making an issue of that fact really just betrays your lack of ability to think logically.
So, it's no surprise then that this group—who clearly lack the ability to listen to any logic or basic reasoning—might have then tried to argue that staying after close means that they no longer have to pay their bill. First of all, this makes no sense. Second of all, even if it were true, the last thing a restaurant would want to do is incentivize customers to stay till after closing time; it's annoying enough as it is when customers refuse to leave.
